Year 1 is an exciting and important stage in your child’s learning journey. We focus on building on the strong foundations developed in Reception and supporting children as they move into more structured learning. Our aim is to make this transition smooth, supportive and enjoyable for all pupils.

Throughout the year, children will take part in a wide range of engaging and enriching activities across the curriculum. We cover key areas such as phonics, early reading, writing, maths, science, and topic work, while continuing to promote creativity, independence, and a love of learning. Children are encouraged to be curious, confident, and kind as they explore new ideas and develop important skills.

Phonics Screening Check

A key focus in Year 1 is the development of early reading skills through our daily phonics sessions. All children in Year 1 take part in the national Phonics Screening Check in the summer term. This short assessment helps us understand how well children can apply their phonics knowledge to decode words. We prepare for this gradually and supportively throughout the year to help every child feel confident and ready.
