Welcome to our Hazel Class page

Class teacher- Miss Hilton

"Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere."

A year full of extraordinary learning.

In Year 4, we embrace an extraordinary variety of learning and always aim to engage and inspire all pupils. Our curriculum fosters inquisitiveness, imagination, and self-assurance through a broad spectrum of creative, and physical activities designed to help every child succeed, no matter their unique strengths or skills. We will always aim to provide children with a fun and positive environment where learning is embraced and celebrated.

  • Literacy: In Year 4 we incorporate a wide variety of Literacy skills through text based and practical activities. Whole-class book studies include ‘krindlekrax,’ ‘The Iron Man’ and ‘The Last Bear.’ Children will publish their own books throughout he year with many having cross curricular links.

  • Drama also serves as a dynamic tool within our classroom. We find our pupils can really develop their creativity and comprehension of texts and literacy skills.

  • Humanities: We explore topics such as ‘Ancient Egypt,’ ‘Deserts,’ ‘The Romans,’ and ‘Europe’. It is key for our pupils that we provide a balanced provision of both History and Geography themed topics.

  • Science: Topics such as ‘Animals including Humans’ ignite some unexpected awe and wonder. Especially when making the digestive system! We pride ourselves with enabling pupils the change to handle real objects where possible when exploring themes within the subject, specifically when recording observations and carrying out experiments.

  • Languages: French is taught throughout the year, alongside introductions to six other languages through our' Language of the Term' initiative, which gives us a taster of further languages used across the globe.

 Creativity and Expression

  • Art & DT: Over the course of the year, pupils are encouraged to explore and refine a wide range of creative skills. In Design and Technology (DT), children enhance their sewing abilities by crafting Christmas decorations, delve into cultural diversity through food technology by sampling Indian cuisine and preparing samosas, and apply their understanding of electrical circuits to design and construct torches. In Art, students develop their painting, sketching, and drawing techniques, experimenting with various media to create pieces with impact and expression.

  • Music: In Year 4, we are very fortunate to have our own clarinets. Each week, we have a lesson where we learn to sing and perform new and exciting songs, as well as develop our skills in reading music and playing our instruments.

Physical Education

  • As well as weekly PE, all pupils benefit from the wonderful opportunity to participate in a weekly Forest School session.  These sessions allow children to embrace and connect with the natural environment, develop new practical skills and learn how to assess and take risks in a safe and supporting setting.

Computing and Digital Skills

  • Pupils explore online safety, AI, Photo shopping and animation. All themes incorporate key skills for an ever digitally expanding future.

Personal Growth and Wellbeing

  • PSHE: We nurture a safe space to explore feelings, values, and relationships as well as learning about our own physical and emotional changes in an age appropriate manner.

Multiplication Tables Check

  • During their time in Year 4, pupils will continue to build on their knowledge and understanding of all times tables (1x-12x). This involves weekly class times tables challenges and practising on the school I-Pads in order to prepare them for the national Multiplication Tables Check in the summer term.
